The Dog House is a new series set inside Wood Green, The Animals Charity, where staff are committed to matching their homeless dogs with hopeful dog owners.
This week on The Dog House, Wally, a poodle cross, tries to win over experienced dog owners Trevor and Julia, after being with us for over a year and sadly having a number of unsuccessful rehomings. Recently widowed Janet is looking for a companion after the death of her husband of 46 years. Step in Bruce, an intelligent Bichon Frise who's looking for a quiet home and a comfy lap. And finally we met Romeo, a talkative terrier who likes to be heard. Young siblings Maya and Xavier were hoping to find a friend in him, but it wasn't to be.
The amazing stories that feature in The Dog House are just a snapshot of the work that we do here at Wood Green. But you’re in the right place to learn more – and discover what goes on behind the scenes. To watch episode seven in full – click here.
Janet did fall for Bruce and take him home, but after another close family bereavement, she sadly wasn’t in a position to look after Bruce, or give him the time and attention he deserved. Bruce has since been rehomed with another family, and has settled in well. Watch our video with Wood Green’s Shannon to find out about Bruce’s story.
At Wood Green, we want to help every pet who needs us and in most cases we can turn things around. In a small amount of cases, due to the dog’s condition and behaviour we are unable to responsibly rehome a pet. Wally was rehomed again earlier this year after being filmed on The Dog House to a capable home with caring owners who were committed to working with his needs. Unfortunately, his behaviour continued to deteriorate. He was biting unpredictably, and acting aggressively. He was distressed and having seizures. The owners very sadly had to return him. Medical checks did not establish any course of treatment that could help him. Because of his increased aggression and psychological distress, the very difficult decision was made to euthanise Wally. We are all deeply upset by this, particularly the staff who have worked with him, but we know we have done the right thing for Wally as his future was so clearly one of further anxiety, with no chance of finding a place where he would not present a risk to himself or others. If you have further questions about this please contact us.

Romeo may not have found the perfect new owner during filming of The Dog House, but we’re delighted to share that he’s since found his forever home.
