Looking after small pets at home and school

Some schools have ‘classroom pets’ to teach children responsibility and to help build confidence. So when we were asked to visit one school with rabbits and guinea pigs, we jumped at the chance to help.

One of the school rabbits recently had a litter and they needed support to determine the gender of the babies. We grabbed the opportunity to spend the morning at the school checking all the pets, clipping their nails and showing the pupils how to carry out a full health check so they could be confident enough to do this regularly.

During our visit, we gave advice on accommodation as the school wished to make some changes and upgrades. We also showed the students how to make hay kebabs for the pets which proved to be a very enjoyable activity!
