When the owner of two ‘female’ rabbits – Ronnie and Roxie – discovered a litter of four babies, it came as quite a shock!
After finding out Ronnie was a male, he was separated from their shared accommodation – but this seemed to have an effect on Roxie. She’d lost her long-term companion, and rejected her babies. Sadly, two of them passed away. But with our guidance, the owner was able to hand rear the remaining two, and they flourished.
Although Ronnie had been moved, it was likely Roxie could be expecting again. And before long, another four bunnies arrived! We offered to bring mum and her babies into our care, and give them the best possible start. This meant Roxie could stay with her little ones while enjoying some extra space to stretch her legs. To prevent any more surprises in the future, we also provided the owner with a voucher to help with the cost of neutering Ronnie.
Once the babies were ready to be rehomed, we found the perfect matches for them. We then neutered Roxie and arranged for her to return home, where she was reunited with Ronnie. But their bond wasn’t the same anymore, and they no longer seemed happy together. Despite our team’s best efforts, we couldn’t rekindle their friendship. Fortunately, the two babies from the first litter were male and female, so it was still possible to split the group into two mixed pairs – usually the best way with rabbits. They got on great together, which meant all of the rabbits could stay in the home!
