Suzie the German Shepherd

A fresh start for golden oldie Suzie

Suzie is a gentle, ten-year-old German Shepherd cross who’s been with us since October 2020. This gorgeous girl was brought to Woodgreen after her owner sadly became unwell and was no longer able to look after her.

A sensitive soul, didn’t settle well into life in our kennels. She seemed unsettled by her new surroundings, so to help her feel more relaxed we placed her in the care of Woodgreen fosterer Beverly and her family.

As well as benefitting from some extra love and care, Suzie is getting help with her behaviour. She can be reactive towards people and other dogs while out on walks, which is likely the result of an incident that happened when she was younger. It involved her being attacked by another dog, leaving her fearful of fellow canines. Because of this, she tends to pull on the lead and bark. By focusing on training that aims to help her feel calm and relaxed, she’ll be able to have greater control and enjoy her walks more.

Suzie has come on leaps and bounds with her training recently and she’s becoming more confident every day.

Beverly says, “When Suzie first arrived, we were all a bit overwhelmed as she’s quite a big dog. But after a few hours she settled down and started to look more comfortable in the home. She is so affectionate and enjoys tummy rubs.”

On their walks, Beverly keeps Suzie occupied with ‘find it’ games which helps her focus her attention on something other than activity around her. She also takes plenty of treats out to keep Suzie controlled on the lead and close to her.

At home, Suzie enjoys scatter feeding in the garden. This brings together two of her favourite things, food and games! It’s also a great way of keeping Suzie’s mind active and the exercise is gentle on this mature lady’s joints.

“We love having Suzie stay with us. She seems very happy and relaxed. We hope she finds her forever home with a family that will love her as much as we do.”

Suzie would make a wonderful pet for the right person and she’s attracted lots of interest. Our Rehoming Team is working hard to find a suitable match who can meet her needs. The perfect home for this lovely girl is a quiet one with no other pets, although she can live with children ideally aged seven or above. She needs access to a large, private garden where she can relax on sunny days too. She’d be happiest in a peaceful area with no neighbouring dogs, where she can go on relaxing walks and not encounter many other canines. We can’t wait to wave her off to her new home soon and we’ll be sure to let you know how she’s getting on.
