Did you know that your feline friend can experience a range of different emotions ? Everyone wants their pet to be happy all the time but, unfortunately, they don’t come with a set of instructions!
The secret to success is getting to know their individual likes and dislikes, because there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.
Below are some things you can try to help your pet stay happy – and live their best life.
As well as filling your cat’s tummy, mealtimes can be a fun way to satisfy their need for mental stimulation. By using items like puzzle feeders or simply scattering dry food on the floor (foraging in the home), you’ll help them engage in their natural instinct for hunting – which they love!
This can be a more natural way for cats to eat – going back to their roots in the wild where they wouldn’t have specific feeding times. For some of our cats, we find that a change in routine can help them stay occupied throughout the day. It can also reduce tricky behaviours, so why not give it a go?
Cats like to hide and perch, both up high and down low. Some have a preference between the two, while others enjoy both. We recommend getting a tall sturdy scratching post, which will provide an outlet to not only scratch but also scent mark. Cardboard boxes or a chair covered with a blanket could also do the trick!
Getting out and about gives cats a chance to explore new sights and smells, and hunt to their heart’s content! It also keeps their brains busy, reduces frustration and prevents unwanted scent marking. If this isn’t an option for you, consider how to create an enclosed area in your garden, or bring some cat-friendly plants inside.
Playing with toys provides another great way for cats to indulge their natural instincts for hunting. We suggest fishing rod toys, ping pong balls, screwed-up tin foil or even paper balls to get their attention. You can then move onto larger toys like a Kong Kickeroo. Catnip is also useful for some extra encouragement!
If your cat doesn’t have access to an area for doing their business, it can cause them a lot of stress. You should have at least one litter tray per cat, plus one spare. Ideally, these should be in different spots of the home (preferably away from loud noise). They may have a preference on the type of litter, but you’ll soon find out which one is to their liking!
