Beautiful Bengal Missy broke her leg after being hit by a car. Sadly, Missy’s owner was unable to afford veterinary treatment and made the difficult decision to hand her beloved cat over to Woodgreen.
Missy’s story isn’t unique – heartbreakingly, we’re seeing more and more owners forced to give up their pets due to financial reasons.
Missy stayed in our surgery wards on pain relief to keep her comfortable. Then, following X-rays to assess the damage to her left leg, our Veterinary team repaired the fracture. She was kept overnight at a nearby vets so they could monitor her recovery out of hours. When she arrived back at Woodgreen the next day, Missy was a little hesitant putting weight on the leg and wasn’t toileting. She was given stronger pain medication, which thankfully resolved the issue.
For several weeks, Missy was restricted to complete floor rest in her cattery until her leg healed. Our Cat team became worried when they noticed Missy walking in an odd way, however. We swiftly X-rayed her leg and saw the bone was healing very slowly, so we continued to keep a close eye on her. When there was no improvement at Missy’s six-week check, we decided to refer her to an external orthopaedic specialist. It was then discovered that Missy’s fracture was healing in an unusual way and this was the reason she wasn’t walking properly. Brave Missy had another operation to successfully sort the problem – and we were delighted to watch her thrive post-surgery.
Now on the road to recovery, Missy was allowed low-level furniture, including a couple of stools and a chair, in her cattery. This gave her more freedom to explore while preventing any big movements too soon, which could damage her leg. Missy soon became frustrated and needy as she’d been on floor rest for a long time. Luckily, though, she was making fantastic progress! Her carers introduced more activities to alleviate her boredom, such as a scratching post and putting her food in cardboard boxes to find – which she loved!
Finally, after nearly four months in our care, Missy was ready to be rehomed. She soon found her perfect match with Sarah, who renamed her new feline friend Beryl Cosmo.
