Make your own: Christmas rabbit and rodent wreath

Get your furry little friends involved in the festive fun with these natural Christmas wreaths!

They’re the perfect present for your pet rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, hamsters and gerbils. They’ll love munching on the tasty treats!

In the wild, rabbits and rodents spend a lot of time foraging and searching for their food. Giving them food in different ways can make it more exciting – helping to keep them busy and happy.

You will need:

  • Hay (long-stranded hay works better)
  • Apple sticks
  • Dried mealworms – for rats, mice, hamsters and gerbils (not rabbits or guinea pigs)
  • A pair of scissors
  • String (natural, cotton, sisal or jute string) or freshly picked willow branches – if your rabbit is on medication, always check with your vet before you use willow branches.

What to do

Step 1

Take a handful of hay and tie it round the middle with some willow, string or long strands of hay.

Step 2

Shape the hay into a wreath, tying it again at various points until you end up with this:

A small, circular nest made of dried grass and hay, resembling a wreath for rabbits and rodents being made, placed on a plain brown surface.

Step 3

Thread the apple sticks, dried herbs and forage (and mealworms for rats, mice, hamsters and gerbils) through and around the wreath.

A small, rustic wreath for rabbits and rodents, made of dried grass, twigs, and wildflowers, with a loop of string for hanging, displayed on a plain brown background.

Step 4

Use some willow, string or several long strands of hay to create a loop at the top of the wreath.

Step 5

Place or hang the wreath in your small pet’s enclosure for them enjoy!
