How to adopt a pet from Woodgreen

Our team works tirelessly to find every pet their perfect match, and we start with the pet’s specific needs – ensuring the best chance of success in a new home.

It’s great you’re thinking about adopting a pet from Woodgreen!

We know this is an exciting time, and you might be wondering what the next steps look like – but we’re here to make the whole process as easy as possible for you.

Whether you’re looking for a cat, dog or small pet, our teams are dedicated to finding you the perfect match.

The adoption process: how it works

From searching for a pet to telling us about yourself, everything you need to know about our adoption process is explained below.

Dogs

Our adoption application process is entirely online. If you don’t have access to the internet, you can contact Pet Support for assistance. Please note that our dogs are not available for viewing by general visitors, but if you are matched with a dog, you will have the opportunity to meet them as part of the rehoming process.

You need to apply for a specific dog –

  1. Look through the available dogs and carefully read their profile.
  2. If you feel you are a potential match for that dog, you need to submit an application for that specific dog.
  3. On each dog’s profile is a ‘Get Started’ button. Click this and complete the Registration Form.
  4. Once complete, click ‘submit’ and then continue to complete the full questionnaire that follows.
  5. If you have already completed a Questionnaire with us within the last six weeks, you do not need to do this again unless your circumstances have changed. However, you will need to complete the Registration Form each time you apply for a new pet.*
  6. Our Rehoming team will assess your application to see if you meet the needs of the dog you’re interested in adopting. If you’re a match and first in the queue, we’ll call you to discuss the next steps. Unfortunately, we cannot reply to unsuccessful applicants due to our charity’s limited resources, but your ‘seeker form’ will stay active for six weeks. We’ll check it daily against other dogs who become ready for rehoming, and if there’s a potential match, we’ll be in touch.

Please be aware that you may need to visit our center in Cambridgeshire more than once, so having your own transport is important as we are not easily accessible by public transport. We also do not recommend taking pets on public transport for their first journey home with you.

*If we don’t have a suitable dog for you, we’ll ask you to keep an eye on our website for other dogs and submit a form for any you are interested in adopting. Please be aware that it can take longer to find a dog for applicants who are looking for a specific breed or a dog with particular characteristics.

Cats

Our adoption application process is entirely online. If you don’t have access to the internet, you can contact Pet Support for assistance. Please note that our cats are not available for viewing by general visitors, but if you are matched with a cat, you will have the opportunity to meet them as part of the rehoming process.

You need to apply for a specific cat –

  1. Look through the cats available for rehoming
  2. If you find a cat that you think could be a match, click the ‘Get Started’ button on their profile to begin the process. After clicking the ‘Get Started’ button, you’ll be prompted to complete a registration form.
  3. Once complete, click ‘submit’ and then continue to complete the questionnaire that follows. If you have already completed a questionnaire with us within the last 6 weeks, you do not need to do this again unless your circumstances have changed.
  4. Our Rehoming team will assess your application to see if you meets the needs of the cat you’re interested in adopting.  If you’re a match and first in the queue, we’ll call you to discuss the next steps. Unfortunately, we cannot reply to unsuccessful applicants due to our charity’s limited resources, but your ‘seeker form’ will stay active for six weeks. Smalls

Once you have selected a small pet and completed an application form, we’ll then be in touch within five days to discuss the next steps with you.

If you already have an enclosure, we may need to ask you to make some adjustments. Most housing sold online and in pet shops isn’t large enough to meet the needs of small pets or allow them to express natural behaviours. But don’t worry, we’ll help you make any necessary adjustments wherever possible. If you don’t already have an enclosure, please wait to speak to our team before purchasing one.

Woodgreen’s pets receive a huge amount of interest. This is fantastic because it helps us find them the best possible home, but it also means we may not be able to match you with a pet in our care straight away.

Why adopt a rescue pet from Woodgreen?

So, why adopt from us? Here are just some of the many reasons:

Expert behaviour assessments

We get to know every pet’s personality including their likes, dislikes and quirks! This helps us find you a companion that matches what you’re looking for.

Free lifetime behaviour support

Our team is here to guide you through any challenges and offer advice whenever you need it. Whatever the issue, we’re always just a phone call or email away.

Health history

We’ll tell you everything we know about the history of your pet’s health, as well as information about any ongoing conditions. This will help you make an informed decision about rehoming them.

Personalised support

Our support doesn’t end once we match you with a pet. Woodgreen’s experienced pet matchers will help you with settling your pet into your home. This includes managing introductions to other pets and family members.

Support a great cause

By adopting from Woodgreen, you’re giving pets a second chance at happiness. Not only that, but you’re also helping us be there for struggling owners – keeping pets and people together.

Affordable adoption

Our rehoming fees include all of the above, plus their first vaccination, neutering (where necessary), flea and worm treatments, and microchipping for dogs, cats and rabbits.

Non-judgmental approach

We understand that things don’t always work out with a match. So, if you need to bring back your pet to us, there’ll be no judgement – just support and understanding.

We always start with the pet’s needs when finding a match

Many of our pets have very particular or complex needs, including medical conditions and behavioural issues. These needs are at the heart of every decision we make about a potential match.

We’re determined to find every pet a home where they can live their best lives.

Helping our pets get back on their paws and into loving new homes

At Woodgreen, we help thousands of dogs, cats and small pets every year – giving them safe shelter, specialist care, lots of fuss, and a brighter future.

We rehome small pets, too!

Did you know we also rehome small pets? We care for rabbits, hamsters, rats, mice and guinea pigs – and we may have a new furry friend for you!

If you have a single small animal looking for a companion, we also offer an onsite small pet mixing service which can help them find a friend.
