Introduction to fostering at Woodgreen

What is fostering?

Fostering provides a temporary home for pets in need while we search for a permanent new owner. A fosterer is responsible for many aspects of a pet’s care. From feeding, exercising and cleaning, to socialising, giving medication and grooming. Find out more here.

Where do I start?

It’s great that you’re thinking about fostering! It’s one of the most rewarding things you can do for pets in need, and we’re always looking for people to join our local fostering team. Learn more and apply to be a fosterer.

What are the criteria for becoming a Woodgreen fosterer?

To become a Woodgreen fosterer, you need to:

  • be aged 18 or over
  • live within a 45 minute drive of our Godmanchester centre
  • Have access to a vehicle and be able to travel to our Godmanchester Centre

If you already have pets, finding a Woodgreen pet to foster is sometimes more difficult due to our animals’ specific needs. But we review each application carefully, and if you have the type of temporary home a pet needs, we will be sure to let you know.

Other fostering FAQs

How long do I need to foster a pet for?

The length of time you need to keep a pet in your care will depend on the reason they are on foster, as well as how long it takes to find them a permanent home. This could be a few weeks to a few months, or even longer.

If you need a break during this time, we can help with finding the pet an alternative foster home.

Is it possible to keep a foster pet?

We understand if you get attached to your foster pet and decide to keep them.

Whilst this might be possible, some of our pets already have a permanent home lined up by Woodgreen’s rehoming experts.

Please contact us as soon as possible if you wish to offer your foster pet a forever home.

I'm waiting for a response to my fostering application. Why haven't I heard anything?

We are very fortunate to receive a huge amount of interest from people who want to foster our pets.

Unfortunately, this means it can take a while before you hear back from us – up to six months during very busy periods.
