Longthorpe Primary Academy welcomes special animal welfare visits from Woodgreen

Children at Longthorpe Primary Academy have been enjoying a series of exciting animal welfare workshops delivered by Woodgreen Pets Charity.

The Peterborough Academy, part of Keys Academies Trust, welcomed Woodgreen’s specialist education team into every classroom as part of a unique programme designed to teach children about responsible pet ownership, kindness towards animals, and the important role pets play within communities.

Through a range of engaging, curriculum-linked activities, pupils of all ages are learning how to care for animals responsibly, understand animal behaviour, and develop empathy and compassion for pets and their owners.

The initiative forms part of Longthorpe Primary Academy’s commitment to providing enriching experiences beyond the classroom while helping children understand the importance of animal welfare and community responsibility.

Longhthorpe’s Headteacher Mrs Jo Ellis said: “We are delighted to be working with Woodgreen Pets Charity and giving every child the opportunity to take part in these inspiring workshops. The sessions help children develop empathy, responsibility and kindness, while also teaching valuable lessons about animal welfare and pet care. The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have been excited to share what they have learned with their families.”

She added: “We are incredibly proud to be supporting a programme that not only enriches learning but also encourages children to become thoughtful and responsible members of their community.”

Hope Tarney-Peters, Community Engagement and Learning Lead at Woodgreen Pets Charity, said: “It has been a pleasure to work with Longthorpe Primary Academy. Woodgreen are delivering a workshop to every class across three separate days and, as a result, the school will be achieving a ‘Helping Pets in the Community’ Award in recognition of its commitment to helping pets in the school community.

“Our workshops are designed to inspire children to think about the needs of animals and the ways they can make a positive difference to pets and their owners. It is fantastic to see such enthusiasm from both pupils and staff.”

Woodgreen’s community education programme has been supporting schools across the region since 2009, delivering free, interactive workshops that encourage children to learn about animal welfare through engaging and practical activities.

Alongside its education work, Woodgreen’s wider Community Team supports pet owners across Peterborough through free services including health checks, advice and home visits, helping families access support that can improve the wellbeing of both pets and owners.

Longthorpe Primary Academy will receive Woodgreen’s prestigious ‘Helping Pets in the Community’ School Award after every class participates in a workshop, recognising the school’s commitment to promoting animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.

Woodgreen are very active in selected Peterborough local neighbourhoods. Alongside visits to schools and community venues, their wider Community Team offer free services to pet owners including health checks and home visits.

This means pet owners receive advice and support that could avoid, or spot the early signs of, common medical and behavioural issues. A great result for both the pet and the owner.
