Oreo with Taff

Loving Labrador cross waiting for a new home has nobody come to meet her in almost a year

Since coming into the care of Woodgreen Pets Charity, an eight-year-old Labrador cross called Oreo has been waiting for a second chance at happiness – but hasn’t had a single person come forwards to meet her in 11 months.

The charity are now seeking a retirement home for one of their longest and most loving residents.

When his wife very sadly passed away, Oreo’s owner was no longer in a position to meet her needs and she was brought to Woodgreen’s centre in Cambridgeshire last July. After leaving everything she’d ever known, Oreo is understandably a little sensitive and doesn’t feel comfortable around other dogs or children. But once she’s bonded with you, Oreo is full of personality, incredibly affectionate and very easy to live with.

While waiting for the perfect new owner to come along, Oreo has been in the care of dedicated Woodgreen fosterers Alison and Taff Squire. Taff said: “Oreo is the best dog ever because she’s so loving, and she’s settled into our home really well. We’ve got closer and closer to her over the last few months and she’s a real joy and comfort to be around.

“Don’t be deceived by Oreo’s age – she’s still full of beans! She’s very intelligent, more so than she lets on, and you see the best of her out on walks with her nose down sniffing and her tail wagging. Although Oreo doesn’t like playing too much, we enjoy the occasional chase around the garden. She’s happiest either sitting in the sunshine looking out of the window or by your side. She really is a great companion.”

Oreo is one of many dogs at Woodgreen who have ongoing medical and behavioural needs, which means it can take significantly longer to find them new homes. Natalie Powdrill-Wells from Woodgreen said: “We are appealing to anyone who could offer a home to a dog who is most in need, like Oreo. It won’t always be easy and there will be challenges along the way, but the rewards will be immense.

“You’ll have to love them as they are, quirks and all, and recognise that they may never be the perfect all-round dog who can happily interact with strangers and other pets. But in the comfort of their home, where they can relax, they’ll be a wonderful addition to your family and will repay your commitment many times over.”

Some dogs’ traumatic pasts mean that Woodgreen are looking for a very specific environment to enable them to thrive, without being triggered by certain sights/sounds, as well as patient owners who can invest time and effort in training. The charity is particularly keen to hear from anyone who:

  1. Is able and willing to stay away from other dogs and unfamiliar people, such as walking in quiet areas, at quieter times of the day, or hiring enclosed spaces
  2. Has no young children living in or visiting the home, as many of these dogs are not comfortable around children
  3. Has no other dogs or cats living in or visiting the home, as these dogs would like a family all to themselves
  4. Is comfortable with a dog that can’t be let off the lead – but would really benefit from a private, secure garden for zoomies and play time
  5. Is at home for most of the day, such as working from home, as many of these dogs can’t cope when left on their own for too long

If you meet the above criteria and could give a second chance to a dog at Woodgreen, please start your rehoming journey here.
