Woodgreen’s response to new Section 1 dogs and children supervision rules

On 09 June 2026, new rules preventing Section 1 dogs from being left unsupervised with children under 12 years of age were announced. The measure is due to come into effect on 01 November 2026.

Keeping children safe in our homes and communities must always be the highest priority. The relationship between a child and a dog can be incredibly rewarding. Children can enjoy companionship, develop confidence, and learn responsibility for another being, while dogs can benefit from social interaction and the love that comes from being a member of the family.

To ensure interactions are safe, children and dogs should always be actively supervised, regardless of regardless of breed, size or temperament.

Education and responsible ownership are the most effective ways to keep both children and dogs safe. This includes teaching children how to interact with dogs calmly and respectfully, and helping owners to understand the behavioural cues that can indicate a dog is needing space or feeling stressed or overwhelmed.
