Senior pets often wait longer to find their new homes

Older pets often spend twice as long in our care before they find a new home, so we'd like to introduce you to some of the fabulous golden oldies we've looked after in 2025!

Meet Sid

This 12-year-old Bengal had quite the year… As well as being one of our older residents, Sid spent a grand total of 370 days in our care before travelling 291 miles to live with new owner in Scotland! This means Sid is the cat who waited longest and travelled furthest to his new home this year.

Known for his chatty personality, we’re sure Sid will be serenading his new owner, John, with plenty of carols this Christmas.

A small brown and white dog with large ears looks at the camera while on a lead. A green circle with the name Scody is in the top left corner.

Say hello to Scody

Surprisingly, Sid wasn’t the only senior pet to make the journey to the highlands this year. 10-year-old Scody also crossed the border! Stopping just short of Sid’s new home, this pup travelled a grand total of 289 miles from Woodgreen to get to his new home in Dumfries.

The lochs are calling Scody’s name as we hear that this pup loves nothing more than donning his raincoat for a nice long walk – he’s careful to avoid any puddles though!

Introducing Jack and Jilly

14 year old Jack and Jilly arrived at Woodgreen when their owner became too unwell to look after them. As the more confident of the two, Jilly soon settled in and found a perfect spot to enjoy her favourite pastime, sunbathing! Jack loved a snuggle with Jilly but was a little shyer around new people. With the support of Jilly and the Woodgreen cat carers, it wasn’t long before Jack discovered a newfound love of lap cuddles.

This pair were the best of pals and we’re pleased to report that after 75 days in our care, Jack and Jilly headed off to their new home together!

A husky with blue eyes looks up to the camera. A green circle in the top left corner displays the name Aerith in white text. A wooden fence and trees are in the background.

All about Aerith

Aerith the 17-year-old Husky originally came to Woodgreen as a stray in 2019 and had been happily rehomed but, after six years, her loving owner sadly passed away so we stepped in to make sure Aerith found a happy home once again.

Our dog carers were pleased to see that despite her age (and lack of teeth), Aerith was still a spritely pup. She was a particular fan of treats and would give a small ‘woof’ to ask for more, swiftly followed by her signature gummy smile to let us know she was enjoying herself. This summer, she trotted off to her new home where she’s enjoying plenty of treats and cuddles.

A tabby and white cat with green eyes looks at the camera. In the top left corner, an orange circle contains the name Gussie in white text.

Get to know Gussie

Ever wondered what an expert lap cat looks like? Well look no further because 16 year old Gussie has perfected the craft! When her owner went into a care home and could no longer care for her, Gussie came to Woodgreen and it was down to us to find her the perfect lap to curl up in.

Before heading off to a new home, Gussie enjoyed a relaxing stay with one of our foster carers. As well as curling up for a cuddle on her fosterer’s chest, Gussie also showed a real penchant for treats and would follow her fosterer into the kitchen in hopes of securing more tasty snacks!

A small brown and black dog sits outside. A green circle with the name Norman in white text is displayed near the dog's head.

Say hi to Norman

When Norman the 11-year-old Terrier arrived at Woodgreen, he needed urgent medical attention. He had a growth so large he could barely lift his head and surgery was essential to give this pup a good quality of life back. Once weighed down and struggling to move, our dog carers couldn’t believe Norman’s post-surgery transformation. With a new lease of life, they said he was like a brand new dog and now loved playing with toys!
