Two small pets

Make your own tube enrichment forage feeder

This tube enrichment feeder is a fun and different way to feed your small pets their favourite forage. They’ll really enjoy getting stuck in and digging out the tasty treats inside!

What you’ll need

  • Empty cardboard tubes.
  • Forage – this will be different for different pets. We’ve given you some ideas below.

Rabbit and guinea pig forage

Rabbits and guinea pigs love fresh hay combined with plants or herbs. For example, wild geraniums, roses, basil, coriander, lemon balm, mint, parsley and thyme.

Rat and mouse forage

For rats and mice, mix some of their daily food with some healthy treats. For example, wholegrain low sugar cereal, small pieces of strawberry, curly kale, broccoli, fresh or dried mealworms, cooked or raw pasta. Always break up raw pasta into small pieces for mice.

Hamster forage

For hamsters, try some of their normal food with a small amount of healthy treats, like broccoli, curly kale or strawberries.

If you have a Syrian hamster, cut along the length of the cardboard tube before stuffing the forage inside. This will help to prevent them from getting stuck if the tube is a bit too narrow for them to get through.

Gerbil forage

Gerbils will love fresh hay combined with a small amount of healthy treats. For example, small pieces of curly kale, broccoli, spinach, peas, fresh or dried mealworms, pumpkin seeds, dried herbs, cooked or raw pasta.

Degu forage

Degus enjoy fresh hay mixed with some dried herbs and flowers, such as hibiscus, rose, dandelion or mallow root.

What to do

  1. Stuff a cardboard tube with a small handful of tasty forage or pet food.
  2. Give the DIY pet feeder to your pet – they’ll love digging in and pulling the forage out!
Three cardboard tubes filled with dried grass, green leaves, and purple flowers create a tune enrichment feeder for small pets. Arranged diagonally on a dark wooden surface, each tube brims with a vibrant mix of foliage.
