Could you star in The Dog House?
If you're looking for a match, filming for the next series starts this Spring.
It took 44 days for Esme to get better. While the first 24 hours were crucial, a dedicated foster home is where she could start to heal.
When a tiny puppy was found abandoned at Woodgreen, she was in a terrible condition. She was freezing cold, sick, and painfully underweight. We brought her inside and helped warm her up in a bed made for guinea pigs.
That’s when we noticed that there was something wrong with one of her front legs. After a check with our vet team, we diagnosed her with carpal laxity syndrome – a condition that could prevent her from learning to walk normally.
She was found just in time to get the care and attention she needed, to have a chance at walking, running and playing like a normal puppy.
We fitted Esme with a splint but sadly after a week, we saw no improvement, and had to remove it.
But we could help in another way – we placed Esme in an experienced foster home where she would receive daily physiotherapy sessions, plus lots of extra love, care and attention.
“We stretched her little paws up and down in a paddling motion and we’d do this up to three times a day,” Esme’s foster carer, Amber, remembers.
We estimated that Esme was around eight-weeks-old, so it was essential that she started to be gently introduced to the world. Amber carried Esme outside in a puppy sling and exposed her to everyday sights and sounds.
“We also tried to get her used to different sensations and scenarios, which is key when they’re so young. Things like checking her teeth, paws, ears, and tail,” Amber remembers.
Gentle exposure and socialisation is essential for young puppies, to encourage their confidence and curiosity. And it certainly worked well for Esme, who Amber described as “a tiny tornado”.
After a month of daily physiotherapy and regular vet support, Esme’s tiny legs could finally keep up with the fearless personality she’d developed through her socialisation with Amber!
It was such a joy to see Esme play and explore, never held back by the wonky legs that had caused us so much concern.
By the time she was rehomed with Samantha, she was almost unrecognisable from the tiny, terrified puppy we took in 44 days ago.
Hope the three-year-old Chihuahua was found alone, with a bloodshot and ruptured eyeball that was causing unimaginable pain.
When this stray cat arrived at Woodgreen, our team weren’t sure he’d make it.
