As with all small pets, hamsters will need to be housed securely away from any other pets in the home. Being prey animals; seeing, smelling or hearing other species like cats and dogs can make them feel unsafe.

What kind of family am I looking for?
Some hamsters can make a lovely first pet for children who are able to handle them in a calm, patient and confident way. They can enjoy coming out to be handled and will take treats from your hands. They thrive on a routine and giving them time out of their cage to explore a playpen or a hamster proofed space can make them very happy and help keep them active and stimulated. Hamsters are crepuscular, meaning they sleep during the day and are most active in the early mornings and late evenings. Because of this, they may not be the best choice for families looking for lots of daytime interaction.
What type of environment would suit me?
A Syrian hamster needs a large enclosure, at least 100cm wide, 50cm deep and 50cm high. This can be achieved in a tank style set up, or a cage with maximum bar spacing of 1cm. They are extremely active animals, who in the wild would travel long distances, so it’s important they have plenty of space and enrichment to keep them occupied. Hamsters spend a lot of time underground digging extensive and complex tunnels and burrows, because of this they will need to have a minimum of six inches bedding with one end being at least 10-12 inches in depth, but the deeper the better!
Female Syrian hamsters tend to be more energetic and active and may require a larger enclosure to keep them happy.

About Biscuit
Biscuit is a lovely, friendly hamster who is still settling in and getting to know her surroundings. She’s a sweet girl with plenty of personality, and we’re still discovering all her little quirks, favourite things and likes.
Biscuit has recently gone into foster care, where she’ll have the opportunity to continue settling in and receive lots of gentle, positive socialisation. This will help her build confidence and allow her foster family to learn more about her personality.
She is an active girl and enjoys digging tunnels through her bedding, foraging for tasty treats and exploring her surroundings. She loves keeping herself busy with different enrichment and enjoys collecting the seeds from her sprays. She’s a curious little girl who enjoys having lots to investigate and explore!
