As with all small pets, hamsters will need to be housed securely away from any other pets in the home. Being prey animals; seeing, smelling or hearing other species like cats and dogs can make them feel unsafe.
Family and environment
What kind of family am I looking for?
Some hamsters may take longer to settle into their new home, so a patient, understanding, confident family will be needed for Jasmine. They are best suited to a home that can provide plenty of enrichment for them to explore independently. Their owners should be prepared to give them time and space to settle and feel safe, recognising that trust will build gradually with patience and gentle handling.
Hamsters are crepuscular, meaning they sleep during the day and are most active in the early mornings and late evenings. Because of this, they may not be the best choice for families looking for lots of daytime interaction.
What type of environment would suit me?
A Syrian hamster needs a large enclosure, at least 100cm wide, 50cm deep and 50cm high. This can be achieved in a tank style set up, or a cage with maximum bar spacing of 1cm. They are extremely active animals, who in the wild would travel long distances, so it’s important they have plenty of space and enrichment to keep them occupied. Hamsters spend a lot of time underground digging extensive and complex tunnels and burrows, because of this they will need to have a minimum of six inches bedding with one end being at least 10-12 inches in depth, but the deeper the better!
Female Syrian hamsters tend to be more energetic and active and may require a larger enclosure to keep them happy.

About Jasmine
Jasmine is a beautiful girl who is looking for the right family to grow her confidence with.
She is very shy and nervous; however, we have seen her start to relax and build her confidence since being with us. Like all hamsters she is not best pleased with being woken up but once given a moment she will then happily take food from our hands to run off and stash in her bed. She enjoys a big sand bath, soil and a large area to explore in.
