Family and environment

What kind of family am I looking for?

He will need an adult only household or a home with older teenagers who can read his body language.

What type of environment would suit me?

Merlin is looking for a home with a private garden to spend time in during the warmer weather. Merlin is not a fan of other cats and so will need a home where there are no visiting cats to the garden. To keep his mind and body active, especially during the winter months when he cannot go outdoors, he will need plenty of enrichment and stimulation.

About Merlin

Meet Merlin!
He is a very handsome boy and is looking for a calm home environment that suits his needs. He loves his treats which is one way to win him over. His favourite toy is a string toy that he chases around and gives him a little exercise. Merlin can be very sweet and affectionate but can also get easily overstimulated which can lead to biting and scratching. He is looking for a home with people willing to offer him lots of enrichment and stimulation.

Things to note

Breeds like this Sphynx have extreme conformation, meaning that their body features are exaggerated. This includes having no fur.

Why these features can be a problem?

These characteristics can negatively affect their health and welfare. For example, they may struggle in the heat and cold and they produce excess oils which makes the prone to dirty ears and skin issues. Whilst not every cat will suffer these problems, it’s important to stop and think before adopting or buying one.

Due to these health issues regularly affecting certain breeds, you may face higher insurance and veterinary costs even if your pet is unaffected.

What to do before getting one

If you’re thinking about welcoming this type of cat to your family, we recommend you do your homework to ensure you’re prepared.

If you are rehoming from a charity like Woodgreen, our veterinary team always give all pets a health check and you will be told about any health problems we identify. Our expert team will be happy to talk to you if you have any questions about the care Merlin might need.

As Merlin is a Sphynx he will need to be bathed and his ears to be regularly cleaned. He will also need to be kept nice and warm in the winter months using lots of blankets in the home
