Woodgreen’s small pet mixing service

For many small pets, the company of furry friends is a must. Sociable animals need companionship to live their best life, otherwise they can become unhappy and stressed.

If you have a small pet looking for a pal, we can help! We offer an onsite mixing service which involves your pet coming to stay at our centre and being mixed with another pet of the same species. This is a carefully planned process which is monitored by our carers, every step of the way.

What species can be mixed at Woodgreen?

We offer the service for guinea pigs, mice, rabbits and rats.

What are the benefits of using Woodgreen’s mixing service?

  • Our team are experienced in mixing small pets, so you can relax knowing your pet is in safe hands, without the worry of having to supervise this process yourself.
  • We often have more than one pet available who is a potential match. This means if the first mix we try is not a successful bond, we can try a mix with another pet once they’ve had a little time to rest in between.
  • Peace of mind that if the first mixing attempt is not successful, you will not be getting attached to a new pet. Like us, pets do not always get along with everyone they meet, so sometimes it takes more than one try to find their perfect new friend.

How it works

The first step is to complete the registration form at the bottom of our rehome a small pet page. A member of staff will then be in touch to talk you though the rest of the process. We will arrange an appointment for you to bring your pet to our centre in Godmanchester. But if we don’t have a suitable companion onsite at the time, you’ll be added to our waiting list.

Next comes the mix! Your pet will stay with us for a number of days while this takes place. Our team will keep you updated on how the mix is going and whether they’ve bonded with the other pet/s. Just like us humans, there’s no guarantee there will be sparks straight away. So it can sometimes take a few goes before we find the perfect match.

How long will the mix take?

When it comes to introducing pets to each other, there’s no magic formula. The time it takes to achieve success can vary. Some will bond quite quickly, while others may need mixing with more than one pet before they find ‘the one’ (or more than one, for those pets who live in groups). The timescales below show how long a mix onsite can take on average, but it’s not unusual for the process to take longer.

Guinea pigs: around 2-5 days
Mice and rats: around 5-8 days
Rabbits – around 4-7 days

What is the cost?

There is a set rehoming fee for any pet you rehome from us (which you can find on this FAQ page). We also kindly ask for an additional donation of your choosing towards the mixing service.

Will I see all of the single available pets on your website?

Some of our single pets will be advertised on our website, but we have many who will not be as the demand for mixing can be high and sometimes these pets are matched with customers already on our waiting list for single pets. Even if you cannot find any available single pets advertised, please complete this form and our team will be in touch to discuss the next steps with you.
