Pet advice from Woodgreen
From behavioural issues to dietary needs and everything in between, we’ve got yo...
This owner took home a pair of rabbits and within seven months she had a group of 16! Our Community Outreach team stepped in to help support with neutering, accommodation and rehoming.
Our Outreach team were approached by an owner who attended our Family Rabbit Workshop at our Godmanchester Centre. They came away with lots of useful information on how to care for rabbits and wanted more support with their new pair, Fluffy and Pringle. After originally bringing home two rabbits, the owner was very surprised to discover three baby rabbits had joined them a couple of weeks after. It turns out, one of the girls was already pregnant at the time they brought her home.
A few months later, the owner found herself with yet another litter of baby rabbits, sadly, all but one from the litter passed away. At the time of asking for our help, the group was made up of the original pair of females, Fluffy and Pringle, two males called Rocky and Cutie Pie, another female, Flash from the first litter and a male, Lucky from the second litter.
We detected that Fluffy, Pringle and Flash were very likely to already be pregnant, so we quickly organised to get the two six-month-old males, Rocky and Cutie Pie neutered. Soon after, the three females all had a litter each, which added to the group! In just seven months of the owner getting two rabbits, she then had a group of 16.
With so many rabbits in just one space, inevitably there were a few squabbles between the rabbits, so we lent a 3m x 2m run to the owner. This meant there was much more space for the group. The owner then managed to find new homes for eight of the babies from recent litters and the other two came to Woodgreen. They are now called Spud and Beans. Later, the owner decided they wished to keep the remaining six rabbits and they have now all been neutered, meaning no more unexpected arrivals!
It’s been a very busy year for our team, they’ve been on the road with Dennis, our community outreach vehicle, establishing new partnerships with food banks and helping pets in need.
