Pet advice from Woodgreen
From behavioural issues to dietary needs, we’ve got you covered.
Like other small pets, they should be kept safely away from other animals in the home. As prey animals, they may feel threatened by the presence of other species such as cats and dogs.
Rats can make excellent pets for families and are often suited to children who can handle them calmly and confidently. They are intelligent, social animals who love human interaction and can form strong bonds with their owners. Rats thrive on routine, and love to come out of their cage to play every day.
Rats are highly intelligent and active animals that need plenty of space to climb, explore and play. For a group of 3-4 rats, a suitable enclosure should measure at least 80cm wide, 50cm deep and 80cm high, with bar spacing no larger than 1cm. Providing enrichment is just as important as the cage size – rats need a stimulating environment to keep them happy and engaged. They also require opportunities for exercise and exploration daily outside of their cage.

Meet the sweetest trio! These girls will melt your heart!
Starburst is a confident and sweet girl who just wants to give so many kisses! As soon as you pop your hands in she will be there giving you constant licks. Jellybean is full of beans!!! She is always keen to come out and will often be waiting at the doors for them to open. She will hop out straight away and simply sit on your shoulder or snuggle into your hood. Last but not least, Granger. She is a friendly, bold and adventurous girl who is a sucker for food and a cosy place to sleep. When she’s not snacking or snoozing, she’s often trying to wake up her friends to play and explore with.
All three girls adore free-range time, pea fishing and exploring any new enrichment they are given. They are curious and clever girls who love to try and work out a challenge.
