Pet advice from Woodgreen
From behavioural issues to dietary needs, we’ve got you covered.
Like other small pets, they should be kept safely away from other animals in the home. As prey animals, they may feel threatened by the presence of other species such as cats and dogs.
Rats can make excellent pets for families and are often suited to children who can handle them calmly and confidently. They are intelligent, social animals who love human interaction and can form strong bonds with their owners. Rats thrive on routine, and love to come out of their cage to play every day.
Rats are highly intelligent and active animals that need plenty of space to climb, explore and play. For a group of 3-4 rats, a suitable enclosure should measure at least 80cm wide, 50cm deep and 80cm high, with bar spacing no larger than 1cm. Providing enrichment is just as important as the cage size – rats need a stimulating environment to keep them happy and engaged. They also require opportunities for exercise and exploration daily outside of their cage.

Thorne, Moose and Dusk – a beautiful trio looking for their forever home.
These girls are a wonderfully bonded trio of females searching for a loving home where they can stay together and even have some more friends.
Moose is the more confident one of the group. She’s calm, chilled and happy to take new experiences in her stride, often leading the way for her sisters. Thorne and Dusk are both extremely curious girls but they both do have a nervous side, but their inquisitive personalities shine through. With a little patience an reassurance, they’re always keen to investigate what’s going on.
All three are wonderfully interactive. As soon as you open their cage door, they’ll come over to say hello and happily climb onto your arms to explore and spend time with you. They’re a joy to watch and love being involved in whatever you are doing. Their bond is truly special – you’ll almost always find them curled up together in a cosy rat pile, sleeping side by side. They take comfort in each other’s company.
If you’re looking for affectionate, engaging companions with plenty of personality, Moose, Thorne and Dusk could be the perfect addition to your family.
