Rabbits Luna and Watson finally rehomed after waiting three years for a home

These beautiful bunnies were in need of a loving home together. Here's how we've helped them along the way.

This lovely pair ended up at Woodgreen as an emergency following an incident involving a dog in their previous home, which sadly left them traumatised. Thankfully they weren’t injured, but the companions are still searching for their happy ending.

At first, Luna and Watson were terrified of everything and it look a long time for them to come out of their shells. Our Small pets team housed them in a quiet, enclosed space in our rabbit area which had plenty of hiding spaces and lots of hay for them to burrow away in when they felt nervous.

We built up their confidence over a number of weeks. The first step was to get them used to their enclosure being cleaned each day. This was a big thing for Luna and Watson to overcome as the noise was very unsettling for them. To begin with, their carers never saw Luna and Watson as they hid under a chair all the time. Then, slowly but surely, they adjusted to our presence and felt brave enough to pop their little heads out – and even sniff a bag or two!

Three-year-old Luna was the more confident of the two, so she was the first rabbit to emerge from her hiding place. It took seven-year-old Watson much longer to relax around us as he was more nervous than his female friend. As the rabbits settled in, we then began hand-feeding them treats to build their confidence so they felt comfortable to approach us. We were delighted to see their confidence go from strength-to-strength.

They went to live with our experienced foster carer, Sue, who’s seen their wonderful personalities come out after gaining their trust. They’ve settled in well and are enjoying many home comforts, including lots of homemade enrichment to keep them occupied. They love to sit on their platforms so they can keep a lookout while they’re resting!

“They’re easy to handle. Watson is timid until he gets to know you but he’ll eat from your hand. Luna is very food orientated – she’ll do anything for something to eat!"

We've finally found these rabbits their happy ending

After 1092 and 1992 days respectively, we’re very pleased to say that we found Luna and Watson their forever home in October 2024.
