Big changes for our smallest pets

We’ve made big improvements to make a difference to small pets and the care we give them.

Last year our Small Pets Section saw an enormous increase in pets coming in because their owners could no longer keep them. Our rabbit section saw an especially big jump with an increase in over 250% in intake requests compared to previous years.

Accidental litters of rabbits and rising pet care costs were the main factors and it means we’re now at maximum capacity most of the time in our Small Pets area. To help make our littlest residents as comfortable as possible, and be able to meet this new challenge, the team have been working hard to improve and expand our small pets areas.

What have we done?

  • Revamped rabbit accommodation – We’ve made better use of our walkway space, giving our rabbits the freedom to hop, run and hide. Our rabbit accommodation (called Blackberry Way) is now covered by a canopy providing vital shade in the summer and protection in the winter when it’s cold so our rabbits can still enjoy outdoor enrichment.
  • Created more space for guinea pigs – With two extra guinea pig houses built, we’re able to support 12-30 guinea pigs, this has increased our capacity by 50%. This extra space means we can now enhance our mixing capabilities to pair up more guinea pigs and rehome them together.

How our small residents are settling in

Dave and Trigger, a pair of rabbits, small pets at Woodgreen

Dave and Trigger

Best buddies Dave and Trigger came to Woodgreen as an emergency intake. They’d been abandoned in a garage with no food, water or hay. At first, they were very nervous and needed lots of support from our team to grow their confidence and build their trust in people. This dynamic duo came on hops, leaps and bounds, and the next step was finding them a new home.

For Dave and Trigger, they were looking for a very specific home with lots of space, especially for Trigger, a Himalayan Giant cross. Our revamped rabbit accommodation has room for rabbits to hop, run and binky to their hearts content. This is great for large rabbit breeds, meaning we can give them the care they need while working closely with them at our centre.
